Did Your Dental Crown Come Out? Follow These Tips

Lonnie Davidson

A dental crown is designed to give a tooth strength and stability for chewing. However, it's possible that a dental crown can fall out over time if the bond between the tooth and the crown fails. Here are some tips for what you can do if you end up with a crown that has fallen out of a tooth.

Schedule A Dentist Appointment

You are going to need to return to the dentist to have the crown put back on the tooth since there is not a permanent method for doing it on your own. Make your appointment as soon as possible to avoid any delays in getting this done.

Save The Crown

Be aware that it is likely possible that your dentist can save the crown and put it back on the tooth. This is why it's very important that you save the crown and bring it to your dentist appointment to have it fixed. A dental crown is very expensive and custom-made to fit in your tooth. Not saving the crown can result in additional costs and time to fix a crown that has fallen out.

Try Using A Temporary Fix

Sometimes you may not be able to get to a dentist right away, such as if you are on vacation when the crown comes up. Thankfully, there are some temporary solutions you can try to give your tooth some protection. A local drug store will sell kits specifically designed for repairing dental crowns. It is a dental cement that will do a good job of holding the crown in place so it fits back on the tooth, but not strong enough to be considered a permanent solution.

Before you try using the temporary bonding material, make sure that you know which way the crown fits on the tooth. Then you can apply the bonding material directly to the crown and place it on the tooth. You'll need to hold the crown in the palace for a couple of minutes for the bonding material to hold. You can then brush your teeth like normal to get rid of any excess bonding material around the crown.

Use Dental Wax

If the tooth is irritating you because it doesn't have a crown, you can try using dental wax and placing it on the tooth's surface. This can help give the tooth some added protection as well from food and other debris.
